Digital and time-based media determine the information cycles of the 21st century, digital data are the main raw material of our time. The ongoing digitalization of society is offering a technological, information-theoretical and communicative change; Covid 19 is accelerating this process worldwide.

Digital art as a barometer of this cultural change allows us to build the kind of vocabulary necessary to tell the recent story.

The 2022 North Rhine-Westphalia Female Artist Award will therefore be awarded in the field of Digital Art.

The Award is intended to recognize outstanding female artists in the field of Digital Art whose work provides important impetus. It creates visibility and recognition for female artists in the field of Digital Art. We are aware of the relevance of non-binary gender models. At the same time, we continue to consider women in the field of Digital Art as particularly worthy of support and therefore see the Female Artist Award as an important contribution to greater equality.

In a variety of ways, the field of Digital Art reflects aesthetic, structural and political dimensions of the network culture in which we’ re living today and contributes to an examination of new forms of communication and organization. Digital Art finds and locates itself outside, but increasingly also within the classical discourses and institutions of contemporary art. It enables, among other things, the overcoming of traditional concepts of work terms and genre boundaries, a critical reflection on systemic contexts and power structures, the breaking away from previous limitations through geography, temporality, and analog materiality, as well as only, for example, an open approach to authorship and gender. In its respective aesthetic or conceptual handling of mass-produced technologies of its time, Digital Art shows itself to be overwhelmingly diverse in its approx. 30-year history; artistic approaches take place by means of different media in the visual and auditory realms as well as in interdisciplinary, cross-media and immersive settings. A substantial artistic position with or on digitality is considered essential.

The Sponsorship Award, which is endowed with 5,000 euros, is open to the public.

All Digital Art artists who were either born in North Rhine-Westphalia OR can prove that they live / work here (copy of ID card with valid address) are eligible to participate in the public call for entries.

There is no age limit.

Applications from students will not be considered (except in justified exceptional cases of professional background in this field).

Digital art collectives are eligible to apply, insofar as the female share of the projects is substantial.

Applications for the sponsorship Award can be submitted from June 1, 2021 via the application portal of the website.

The deadline for applications is August 31, 2021.

The Main Award of 10,000 euros will be awarded parallel to the publicly announced sponsorship award. This one is based on a european-wide nomination process by experts and is intended to honor an artist for her life's work.

The Sponsorship Award as well as the Main Award will be decided by an independent jury.

The award ceremony will take place on February 18th 2022 at K21 Düsseldorf.
